Gratitude

I want to share a quick story, and it has to do with my own life, but I tell it in hopes that my words might give you the faith required to enrich your own life. It has to do with the law of attraction.

My wife and I were walking along the beach the other morning and came across the word Gratitude written in large letters in the sand. I’ve been reflecting a lot on gratitude lately, and I think it’s such a healthy practice to take a moment every day and recognize what you’re thankful for. I keep a morning journal for this purpose. Upon seeing the word, we stopped and took a moment to be grateful.

My wife suggested that I write my own word in the sand. She said something like, “Write what you most want at this moment and let the waves wash over it and take it into the sea.”

I wrote Hollywood in the sand, and I didn’t just speedily scratch it out. I dug my toes in and carved out each letter with belief. For more than a decade, selling one of my books to Hollywood has been my creative dream.

So I didn’t just write the word, I pictured myself escorting my stunning wife into the premiere of Red Mountain in a theater in Hollywood. I could even feel the pride of all our hard work as we held hands and found our seats, waiting for the opening credits.

The next afternoon, I received an email from a producer in LA interested in optioning the rights to Red Mountain. I’m not joking!

Coincidence? I think not. When I’m healthy and happy and receptive (don’t we all have our bad days… oh, boy, do I!), I witness these little miracles all the time. I bet you do too.

Our universe is full of energy. Should we tune ourselves to the correct frequency, we can connect to this higher design with ease. All it takes is a bit of faith and discipline.

Byron Katie said life happens for you, not to you. I believe that with all my heart. And you must believe if you want it to be true.

The stories you tell yourself, your word choice and your perception create your life. If you think the world is out to get you, it most certainly will. If you think the people around you are trying to take advantage of you, they will. But if you think the world is your playground, it will be. Why not let the red carpet roll out in front of you all the way to the grave?

I believe—when I’m not suffering from the self-doubt, fear, or sadness—that the universe is always listening, and if you do tune yourself to an open-minded, receptive frequency, you can connect in a giant way, and your entire world will be elevated. Once you’re connected, you have the ability to design your life with thoughts and feelings.

If that all sounds like mumbo jumbo, if Boo is sounding a little too New-Agey for you, I’m sorry you feel that way. You don’t have to subscribe to a religion to believe this stuff. All you have to do is agree that we’re all connected by energy—this beautiful electricity. Quantum physicists study this exact phenomenon. In You Are the Placebo by Dr. Joe Dispenza, there’s an essential chapter (Chapter 8, The Quantum Mind) exploring the science behind the law of attraction.

Let’s dive deeper into this manifestation. Details are important. What will happen with this Hollywood connection? Will something come of it? I don’t know.

Hold on, wait. Scratch that. Forget what I just said about not knowing. I can’t be so unsure. Not if I want to manifest an outcome.

Let me start over. What will happen with this connection? Here is my detailed vision. A screenwriter will adapt Red Mountain to a screenplay with splendid artistry, and Sony will jump all over the film rights. The movie will be greenlit quickly, and an Oscar-worthy film will be made with A-list actors.

Actually, I don’t want it to be a movie. I want it to be a series.

HBO.

I’m going to take this one step further and change my verb tense. As you explore manifestation, visualization is an important component. You need to close your eyes and see it as if it’s already happened.

Here we go:

I sold the rights to Red Mountain, Red Mountain Rising, and A Marriage Well Done to HBO, who assembled the perfect cast and crew. The story of Red Mountain was brought to life beautifully with a world-class director. I ended up writing six more books in The Red Mountain Chronicles, and HBO followed the story perfectly for eight seasons, making a hit series that was better than I could have ever imagined.

If you don’t know what you want in life—and if you don’t put it out there—something or someone else is going to design your path for you.
Take a moment to write down what you want in the next year. In five years. Ten. Twenty.

I promise you it’s worth your time. Once you know what you want, start to feel it. Taste it. Live it. Close your eyes and see it. And be grateful for the thing as if it has already happened.

If HBO makes this series… no, I will choose a better word.

When HBO makes this series, any thoughts on casting? Please comment below. A winemaker on Red Mountain mentioned that Cameron Diaz would be perfect for Carmen. I happen to agree. How about Otis? Jake? Margot? If I could take Meryl Streep back in time, I think she’d be the perfect Margot!

Anyway, go ahead. Put your dreams out there. I think you’re ready.

  1. Netflix for the win! You’ll do it Boo! Hang in there because it’s going to be a hell of a ride. Sam Elliot will be the perfect Otis. I agree with Adam Levine as Jake. Nicole Kidman has to be Carmin. How about Mark Ruffalo as Brooks? I rarely watch tv or movies so I’m seeing actors but don’t know their names. Shirley McClain would be a great Joan. Please keep us posted! Your wonderful trilogy is going places.

    1. Agree with Dana N. on character. Love Sam Elliott for Otis. ove the RV adventure. My husband and I did that…went to all 50 states and 14 countries. Love the RV’ing the best. Loved Margot’s charaacter. Wish there were more books in this serues, Read them all in a week on my Kindle.

  2. I have read your first three Red Mountain books and have enjoyed them immensely. The characters are so real that I feel like they are people that I have known for years and your description of this beautiful area makes me want to be there. I can’t wait for the next book in the series and hope that you will continue to write more. I would also love to see this in a series. Thank you for these beautiful stories!

  3. I stumbled across your book, Red Mountain, earlier today and never stop reading except to Google all that is Red Mountain while praying it really did exist! Thank you for writing a book so full of heart and grace and warmth and wisdom and characters I feel I’ve known my entire life or have been waiting forever to meet. I am that person that rarely leaves comments and pretty much never visits an author’s website. Yet, here I am and so thankful to the universe for leading me to stumble across your beautiful book! Thank you for allowing me a glimpse into your world of Red Mountain and for a sequel and prequel, and that HBO series that I envision will go on at least as long as it takes for Emilia to make Margot a grandmother and for Luca and the Moon People to save the world! Thank you and best wishes for continued success!

  4. I am thinking Michelle Pfeiffer would make a great Joan. I agree with the Ann Margaret for Margot. Owen could be Michael Douglas. Jake belongs to Sting. His wife could be played by Nicole Kidman. Hmmmmm, it sure would be fun to watch:)

  5. Love the characters & storyline you’ve created. Thank you! I see Christina Hendricks as Margot and Nat Wolff as Jasper.

  6. I wish you well, Boo, and I’m excited to hear about your books being made into films/series. No matter what I’ll be watching for them. I love your “gratitude” photo…just believe in yourself…your a wonderfully gifted writer and you have all of us rooting for you.
I think Robert Duvall would make a great Otis. I like Meryl Streep as Margot or maybe Ann Margaret if she is still making movies….see the movie, “Grumpy Old Men”…its an older movie, but she played a frisky gal. lol

Blessings to you and your wife,
    Sandy G.

  7. I have been hoping that this would truly happen for you. I think you are a wonderful, inspiring person. I am so thankful for the nudge to buy all your books. I even watched for the 1st time Under the Tuscon Sun..OMG!! I am 66 yrs old and I feel like my life is just beginning, sooo Grateful.!!

  8. How exciting!! As a current Red Mountain area occupant, it is a joy to read about the area with characters you can relate to with real life challenges. I am currently faced with a challenge to take on one of my dreams, and people are telling me I can’t do it because it is touch. I do not feel that way but the self-doubt creeps in and I find myself questioning whether it is something I can do. Ironically I told myself last night to write everything down and see it on paper before making the decision. The challenge I’m facing is to whether I should sign up for the Mustang Madness competition. I can see Margot doing this with her love of animals and wanting a sanctuary (I see a lot of myself in her).

I am rooting for you and the Red Mountain series to be a huge success!!

As for actors, for Jake I think Ian Somerhaler would be a good pick and Emmylou Harris as Joan. Drawing a blank on the others!

Best of luck to you and RMR is next on my reading list.

    1. Go for the Mustang Madness! IF you know how to train a horse, and have been training for a few years at least. Of course it will be tough, but oh so very worth it if you succeed! Give a horse who might have a short life a job, a career, a useful place in history! I have friends who have OTTT s who have given them wonderful second careers. But it’s a lot of dedicated work. and I think in MM you only have a month or so to train them, right? Whew! A wonderful adventure that probably won’t get easier if you already have some years behind you. Even if you don’t get the best horse and have limited success, you may find a great partner for the next chapter in your life. Go for it and have fun! Be safe though! Wish i could find out if you do it, i’d be cheering you on… Blessings, Jill

    2. Go for it! Please!,,,
These books have certainly helped me. I loved them! I’m currently training two mustangs, following a dream I never dared to consider. I was full of doubt, and started readin Red Mountain as I made that leap. Just finished Red Mountain Rising and it just made me feel all the more confident that I’m following my dreams.

    3. Please, don’t let people talk you out of your dreams! Everything is tough. If it were easy, would we even bother? Sixty is right around the corner for me, and I’m beginning to feel if not now, when? Do it and best wishes for the outcome you dream of!
      Connie

  9. Hi Boo,

Such great news! As one of your Beta readers for RMR, of course I have taken a great interest in your career, and wish you the best.
Interesting that you bring up tuning into the energy of the universe. When I go for long walks, I have been taught by a spiritual guide and councillor to open my heart chakra and third eye, and then allow the healing and loving energy of our creator to flow through me via the portal of my highest self. The energy flows through me into the earth to ground me. It calms my mind and heart and then flows out of me to others….it has been life changing for me!
So you are not whacko…its the real deal!

  10. I read 36 books last year and recently stumbled upon Low Country Punch by chance. That led me to red Mountain that I am about half thru. I plan to now read all of your books and anything else that I can get my hands on that you have written. What a diverse, thoughtful and sensitive writer!. From cocaine busts and associated beatings to the esoteric explorations of the inner self. I hope to get to know you and your writings better and wish you the very best with your HBO”plan”. I would certainly be a fan and viewer.

  11. Lots of friends I have call your experience God Winks….. And, I agree – if you are open to them, you can see them all around. Just finished reading the whole Red Mountain series – all 3 books – love books in a series…. so movie or not, I look forward to the continuing saga on Red Mountain….. there is still so much story to unfold!

  12. This is so weird….last night as I was reading in bed (my second book of yours) I was imagining it as a series, not a movie. Netflix maybe? I was picturing who would play the characters and I could thought Nichole Kidman as Margot before I fell asleep with my Kindle in my hands. Red Mountain would be a fabulous series, can’t wait!!!!!

  13. This is great . May God bless you during this process.

I have been visualizing the characters in the Red Mountain series as I read. About 1/3 through Rising now.

I could see Mary Steenburgen as Joan. Adam Lavene (not an actor but fits the bill) as Jake. Richard Gere as Otis. I’m with you on Cameron Diaz. Jennifer Anniston as Margot. Ben Affleck as Brooks. I’m not an actor but could play Brooks ‘ brother.

  14. I couldn’t be happier for you and hope that all your dreams come true! Many years ago I read a book by Henriette Klauser, Ph.D., titled “Write it Down, Make it Happen.” The book’s premise is exactly how it sounds – if we write down what we want, we can make it happen. I’ve used that method many times and have been successful. You can think of it as simply as making a shopping list, going shopping for what’s on the list, and having tangible items when you reach your shopping goal. Some things required a lot of work on my own part, and I’ve had what I call nudges from God or God whispers, but we all need to follow whatever we believe is leading us in the right direction. That’s what you’ve done – you’ve worked hard to be where you are and to be where you want to be. Congratulations! Be sure to keep us posted on the progress as your dreams are fulfilled. We’ll be dreaming along with you and for you.

  15. So delighted you wrote this as I have read and reread You Are the Placebo, and Tama Reise’s Thriving Thru Uncertainty, and it’s worth it to catch Christie Marie Sheldon on YouTube. Yes! Be love and above!

  16. This is so great. As I was reading both Red Mountain books, I was thinking, this should be a great Netflix series (I don’t get HBO Lol). Can’t wait to watch. I loved both books so much and I’m starting A Marriage Well Done today.

I was up at the wineries this past April and think about that area all the time. I loved it. It has been great reading about it and revisiting in my mind.

    Congratulations

  17. Wow!!!! That is so great. I am so glad for you. Can’t wait to see them on film. I can’t think of anyone who would do the characters justice but I’m sure they will pick the right ones.
